Newborn Baby Birth Weight: What Is Normal, Average and Low?

Did you ever wonder what is the normal weight of a newborn baby?

You may be concerned about your own baby’s health or you just may be curious.


Either way keep on reading to find out what still counts as “normal” weight, what is the averga baby birth weight and what causes babies to be either tiny or heavy.

Normal newborn birth weight

A normal healthy newborn baby will weight between 5.8 and 9 pounds (from 2.600 to 4.000 grams).

Anything bellow that would classify as low birth weight.

A large newborn weighing over 9 pounds is described as having “fetal macrosomia“.

Average newborn birth weight

An average baby weighs around 7.5 pounds (3.400 grams). This applies to Caucasian babies, Asian and African-American babies tend to be a little smaller.

   

What can influence baby birth weight

  • Your diet before and during pregnancy
  • Your weight before and during pregnancy
  • Your prenatal health
  • Smoking and use of or drugs
  • Genetics
  • Your age (teen moms tend to have smaller babies)
  • Firstborns tend to be smaller than subsquent babies
  • Multiples tend to be smaller than singletons

  • Madeline birth weight: 9.9 oz (280 g) – USA at 26 weeks
  • Amillia weighed 10 oz (283 g) – USA, born at 21 weeks
  • Marian birth weight 10 oz (283 g) – UK at 34 weeks

Highest birth weight:

  • Akbar, 19 pounds, 3 ounces (8.7 kg) – North Sumatra
  • Nadia, birth weight 17 pounds, 1 ounce (7.7 kg) – Siberia
  • Ademilton, weighed in at, 16 pounds, 11 ounces (7.6 kg) – Brazil
  • ‘Super Tonio’ was born weighing 14 pounds, 8 ounces (6.6kg) – Mexico
  • Shaune – newborn at 14 pounds, 7 ounces (6.5 kg) – United Kingdom
